英語でリラックマな気分 (6)

Here's another attempt
to translate Relakkuma's wise counsel
found in its picture-book series.
無理難題,ひとによっては無問題
A hot potato for some can be
just a piece of cake for others.

(ある人にとっては厄介な しろものも
他の人にとっては たやすいこと)

As I stated in my previous posting,
sometimes it's impossible
to translate a pun,
and this may be such an example.
In the original Japanese caption,
you can clearly see
― or I should say "hear" ―
a pun-like repetition of "mu" and "(na/mo)-n-dai" sound,
which gives the sentence a brisk rhythm
in a 5-7-5-syllabic haiku structure.
I wish I could do the same in English,
but I rather turned to another technique,
which highlights the imagery
a certain kind of idiomatic expressions evoke.
In this instance,
I employed a food-related figure of speech.
The expression "a hot potato" means
something you find difficult to deal with
while "a piece of cake" refers to
something you find very easy to do.
In this way,
although I may not be able to
reconstruct a pun-laden rhythm of the original text,
I hope I've at least succeeded in
retaining its tongue-in-cheek aspect.

Alternatively,
you might be inspired by the following proverbs:
One man's waste/trash is another man's treasure.
One man's meat is another man's poison.
In that case,
the rendition can be something like:
One man's hot potato is meat and drink to another.
"meat and drink to someone" is yet another idiomatic phrase,
which simply means something you enjoy doing
or something you find very easy to do.
この英文の日本語版は近日中に掲載予定です。どうぞお楽しみに。
