英語で格言 (1)

According to the author of Don Quixote,
Miguel de Cervantes,
a proverb is a short sentence based on long experience.
It's a brief summation of
what life is all about,
serving as a beacon for us
to guide our journey in this increasingly chaotic world.
It's a gem of wisdom
encapsulated in a clever, sometimes witty, sentence
filled with well-chosen words and phrases,
giving us a glimpse into truth.
Whether you call it a saying, maxim, axiom, adage or whatever,
you inevitably encounter one of these words of wisdom
every now and then.
In my case, I often read them
written on a so-called "daily calendar",
with which you can turn one page for each day.
More often than not,
the source of clever remarks
found on these calendars are anonymous,
which I suspect may probably mean that
they haven't been properly translated into English yet,
except the one written both in Japanese and English in the first place.
So I decided to take up the slack
and put my English skills to good account
in order to render some of them into English.
The first one I'd like to take on is as follows:
By mustering up just a little bit of courage
to tackle what you are least good at,
you can expand your life's horizon.

(苦手なことに挑戦するちょっとした勇気を奮い起こすことで,
 自分の生き方を広げることができるのです)

This sentence should remind us
of the importance of taking up a new challenge
in our struggle to explore a way forward
as the world is becoming
an increasingly messy and dangerous place to live in.
This may also serve as a good reminder
for many learners of English that
they can develop their English skill-set
by applying themselves to a wide range of learning experience
and exposing themselves to a variety of subjects and topics.
